You know, I noticed what you were trying to do with the eyes, I would suggest doing a white overlay around 50-75% on the whites of the eyes, then use the original irises, before darkening, do a red color layer for them, and then darkening them as needed. It will make the eyes pop, and make you seem more ferocious.
